Laos’ tourism industry is rebounding, particularly in the ancient capital of Luang Prabang in the northern region of the country, following a period of reduced travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The province welcomed over 273,000 tourists in the first three months of 2022, of whom 240,000 were foreign arrivals, generating more than $157m in earnings from tourism. In 2019, Laos welcomed over 4.79 million international tourists, and the industry was one of the country’s three largest sources of foreign currency revenue before the pandemic, along with electricity and mineral exports. The Lao government is aiming to attract at least 1.4 million foreign tourists in 2022.
