The Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism (MICT) in Laos has held a meeting with various stakeholders to discuss the possibility of updating the country’s tourism laws. The meeting discussed suggestions from government, private businesses, international and domestic experts in order to improve the country’s tourism law. The updated law will define better the roles and responsibilities of different sectors involved in the tourism industry, concentrate on sustainable usage of Laos’ resources for tourism, and improve cooperation between the government and the private sector. The goal of cooperation between the public and private tourism sectors is to develop digital platforms for online travel reservations to avoid loss in revenue collection. Five new laws on tourist sites, districts, market promotion, wellness business, and tourism at forest reserves has been announced by the head of the Tourism Business Management Department. The funding from the Asian Development Bank has been approved by the National Assembly and the MICT for research and expert assistance in updating the law. According to the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, there has been a boost in tourism in the first quarter of 2023, with over 800,000 international visitors.
