The Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism in Laos is projecting that foreign visitor arrivals to the country will increase by 4% in 2016, to reach 4.33 million visitors. In 2011, foreign visitor arrivals to Laos totaled 2.7 million, increasing to 4.1 million in 2015, a rise of 51% over five years, with revenue from tourism reaching $560m last year, an increase of 40% on 2011. The Laos government is expecting to see revenue from tourism hit $670m in 2016. There are now 342 tour companies operating across the country, up from 236 in 2011, and the number of hotels, guesthouses and resorts has risen from 1,926 to 2,426 over the past five years. Laos is working hard to improve its tourism industry, after being voted World’s Best Tourist Destination in 2013, and Luang Prabang being named ‘Best City’ in the Wanderlust Travel Awards for 2015.
