A direct cross-border train service between Vientiane in Laos and Kunming in China began operating on Thursday. The service, called Lane Xang, was launched by the Laos-China railway project and is supported by the leaders of both governments as a symbol of modern-era friendship. The railway was built to help integrate Laos into the region by providing a vital transport link. It is hoped that the service will increase tourist income and help to alleviate economic problems. The journey between Vientiane and Kunming covers 1,035 km and has a total travel time of 10.5 hours. It includes eight stops and an immigration check at the Boten-Bohan border crossing. The service is expected to boost international travel in the region.
