Nepal and India are reportedly finalizing an agreement for cross-border digital payment using e-wallets. This is expected to boost trade and travel by eliminating currency hassles for Indian visitors to Nepal. The agreement will allow Indian tourists in Nepal to make digital payments using Indian e-wallets. However, the executive director of Nepal Rastra Bank and chief of the payments department, Guru Prasad Poudel, said they were not aware of the plan. According to Indian media reports, the advantage of traveling to Nepal is that one does not need to change money. The launch of digital payment services in Nepal is expected to eliminate the hassle of carrying large amounts of cash. Though India is Nepal’s close neighbour, financial transactions between the two countries are complex. Nevertheless, Nepal’s central bank is positive about facilitating cross-border transactions through collaboration between Nepali and Indian private fintech companies.
