Nepal’s new regulations banning independent trekkers from the country’s mountain areas have thrown the tourism industry into chaos as government officials have failed to implement the measures. The regulation requires all trekkers to obtain a Trekkers’ Information Management Systems (TIMS) card and travel with a guide, but some checkpoints have yet to open, leaving independent trekkers without a clear understanding of how to proceed. The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality has also rebelled against the regulation, maintaining tourists can continue to trek in the Everest region without a guide so long as they obtain a TREK card. The regulations risk hurting small local businesses and tourism to the area overall, causing uncertainty for trekkers, and do not seem to have been planned well by the Nepal Tourism Board.
