The Nepal Army is launching the “Clean Mountain Campaign 2023” to collect at least 35,000 kg of degradable and non-degradable waste from Mount Everest and three other mountain peaks. The campaign will run from March 28 to June 6 and involve the mobilisation of 13 Army personnel for Everest and Lhotse, nine for Barunche and 10 soldiers in Annapurna, as well as Sherpa guides and helpers. Under coordination and collaboration with various governmental and non-governmental organisations, the campaign aims to preserve the mountains for future generations, attract tourists and mountaineers, and spread awareness about the adverse effects of climate change and human-induced waste on the Himalayas. It is estimated that there are currently 14,000 tons of garbage and over 300 bodies on Mount Everest, making conservation measures necessary.
