Solo trekkers are now banned from climbing all mountains in Nepal due to safety concerns and the high costs of search and rescue missions. The country had already banned solo trekkers from climbing Mount Everest five years ago, but the ban now applies to all mountains in Nepal, including the country’s eight tallest peaks. The decision has been made due to the high number of trekkers getting lost during solo trips and incurring large search and rescue costs. The country’s remote mountainous regions lack the infrastructure to help lost travellers and unlicensed tour guides and companies have been a problem. Trekking companies have supported the decision as it should reduce the number of inexperienced climbers and those undertaking difficult climbs, and ensure greater safety for those who continue to trek. Nepal offers various treks other than Everest, including the Annapurna Base Camp Trek and the Upper Mustang Trek.
