The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has organized a workshop, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation of Nepal and the Nepal Tourism Board, to help Asia-Pacific destinations reopen safely and sustainably. The event saw 200 participants from nine member states come together to discuss the theme of “Measuring the Sustainability of Tourism for people, planet, and prosperity”. The need for national and international cooperation to generate reliable data was emphasized. Technical training sessions were held to focus on tourism statistics, economic impact, and sustainability, with an aim to exchange good practices. Participants talked about the UN statistical standard “International Recommendations for Tourism Statistics 2008” and reviewed the requirements for successful TSA compilation. The final session talked about the MST Statistical Framework, which offered unique insights on the importance of using MST indicators for policy development and the compilation of official tourism SDG indicators. The nine member states that attended the workshop included Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Maldives, Nepal, the Philippines and Thailand, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative of Nepal also participated.
