KABUL: The busiest border crossing between Afghanistan and Pakistan has been closed for commercial vehicle drivers to trade in the last line of the document rules for crossing the border.
Crossings between the two countries have been temporarily closed in recent months after Islamabad launched a large-scale crackdown on undocumented Afghans living in Pakistan last year and tightened document requirements for Afghans entering the country.
According to officials on both sides of the border, the two sides blamed each other for the latest closure at the Torkham crossing, which began on Friday night.
“Torkham is closed by Pakistani authorities to commercial truck drivers without visas,” Afghan Border Guard official Abdul Jabbar Hikmat said in a statement on Friday.
