Challenging Times for Durban Tourism as Visitor Numbers Decline
In the vibrant city of Durban, the tourism industry is grappling with dwindling visitor numbers and declining spending. The city, which once boasted of welcoming 7.4 million visitors in 2015 with a direct spend of R19.2 billion, now just manages to attract only 800,000 visitors and a R1.6 billion direct spend. Yet, Durban Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda confidently assures that the city’s performance is not a cause for concern, citing hotel occupancy rates that are slightly higher than the previous year.
Troubled Waters
Despite the Mayor’s optimism, Durban’s beaches, a prime tourist attraction, are facing issues of their own. High E. coli levels have led to frequent beach closures, impacting the tourism appeal and affecting local businesses. The closures have resulted in a wave of depression among residents and business owners, who are now demanding governmental action to improve the conditions.
