British tourists warned asa killer heatwave in Greece hits 44C. British tourists are being warned as a deadly heatwave sweeps Greece, as well as Turkey and Cyprus too, with a number of deaths and the record temperatures triggering multiple tragedies.
Greek state TV meteorologist Panos Giannopoulos warned: “In the 20th century we never had a heatwave before 19 June. We have had several in the 21st century, but none before 15 June.” The city of Chania on Crete recorded the highest temperature, reaching 44.5C last Thursday.
On its website, the Foreign Office warns: “There are active wildfires across Greece, including in populated areas on the mainland and a number of islands. Wildfires are highly dangerous and unpredictable….
