The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has cleared the $7.3 billion merger between American satellite company, Viasat, and British satellite company, Inmarsat. The CMA states the deal does not significantly reduce competition for services used by UK customers. The growing demand for satellite connectivity—driven by the increase in internet usage among businesses and consumers—along with new entrants to the industry, has minimized any potential threat to competition posed by the merger. Richard Feasey, chair of the independent inquiry group conducting the investigation, confirmed the conclusion citing the evolving and rapidly expanding nature of the sector.
