British satellite provider, Inmarsat, announced that it will offer free basic tracking services for aircrafts over oceans in an effort to prevent incidents like the loss of Malaysian Airlines Flight 370. The service will be available to the 11,000 commercial passenger aircraft already equipped with an Inmarsat satellite connection, which includes a majority of the world’s long haul commercial fleet. The Malaysian plane, which had 239 passengers, vanished on March 24 after its transponder and communication systems shut down. The plane was still able to communicate hourly signals to an Inmarsat satellite, but analysis of the data arrived too late to facilitate a rescue.
