The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) of the UK has provisionally approved the £5.4 billion takeover of UK satellite company Inmarsat by US-based Viasat, a deal which had been closely analysed for its impact on competition in the rapidly-growing aviation sector. The two companies are leaders in providing in-flight wifi services. Despite the close competition between them, the CMA concluded that the merged entity will not severely impair market competition, taking into account the significant competition posed by both new and established players in this expanding industry. The ruling came upon the completion of an in-depth probe over four months by the CMA.
