On Friday, June 4, 1979, The Fiji Times published an article of a man who had helped mould the tourism industry in Fiji to what it is today.
Michael Jay of the United Kingdom had been teaching and training students in hotel and catering for six years.
Mr Jay was then the head of school of food and fashion. He left the country later that year returning home.
His departure was a great loss to the tourism industry and the question was asked on whether the industry could afford to lose someone of his calibre at such a crucial stage of development.
Mr Jay first arrived in Fiji in 1973 and decided to stay for only three years but ended up living here for six years.
In those six years, he helped train many students, some of whom later found themselves in responsible positions at some of the best hotels in Fiji.
He was a qualified trained teacher with nine years teaching behind him at the prestigious Hotel And Catering Institute Management Association in the United Kingdom.
