Mumbai: Airline punctuality at
Mumbai airport improved across most carriers in Feb as compared to Jan, according to air traffic data released by Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Friday. Around mid-Feb, the ministry of civil aviation had enforced a reduction in flight volumes at the city airport, cutting about 40 flights per day, to improve the on-time performance of airlines. IndiGo, which has a 60% market share, was the top performer in terms of flight punctuality improvement in Feb. It recorded an on-time performance (OTP) of 50% in Feb, as compared to 41% in Jan and 44% in Dec 2023. Air India’s OTP went up to 45% in Feb from 43% in Jan, but Vistara dipped in OTP by 7% and so did airlines like Akasa Air and Alliance Air. SpiceJet and AIX Connect showed a marginal improvement in punctuality last month (see graphic).Jan was a particularly bad month for airline OTP due to fog delays in Delhi, the busiest airport of the country. It sent a cascading effect on flight schedules across India. Dec, though, had seen comparatively fewer fog-related delays than Jan. Between Jan and Feb, domestic airlines carried nearly 257.8 lakh passengers as against 246.1 lakh during the corresponding period in 2023, the DGCA data showed. For the past several months, Mumbai airport has stood out for having a consistently poor ‘on-time performance’ record — a measure of flight punctuality. As the operator did not “proactively take steps to streamline and regulate air traffic movements”, the ministry said it had to step in and impose flight restrictions last month.
