AirAsia X, a low-cost, medium to long-haul airline, has reported a 50% increase in passenger numbers in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the previous quarter. The growth was driven by changes in COVID-19 restrictions, new year holidays in Asia and spring season travel demand. AirAsia X took quick advantage of the reopening of travel in mainland China by adding additional seat capacity soon after the changes were announced. The airline increased seat capacity by 47% quarter-on-quarter to 630,069 seats, while available seat kilometers (ASKs) surged by 71% to 2,899 million. Despite all the extra capacity, AirAsia X generated an acceptable passenger load factor of 80%, almost unchanged from the previous quarter. The airline also reactivated aircraft and ramped up frequencies across the core network, relaunched more in-demand destinations and flagged its plans to push for more growth. AirAsia X’s associate airline, AirAsia X Thailand, reported a 29% gain in passenger numbers in the same quarter.
