Tony Fernandes, founder of AirAsia, is stepping back from day-to-day management of the airline to focus on other areas such as health, education and private equity. The 58-year-old Malaysian businessman, who is credited with revolutionising budget air travel in Asia, will step back as the industry emerges from the impact of Covid-19. Like other carriers, AirAsia was hit hard by the pandemic which has led to the closure of its ventures in Japan and India. AirAsia still operates airlines out of Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines, and plans a Cambodia launch.
