After going on a bizarre chocolate-throwing rampage during a flight from California to London Heathrow, a British Airways flight attendant has been charged with five counts of assault by beating.
According to a court hearing, a frequent flyer on a British Airways business class flight went on a “bizarre” rampage that included hurling chocolates at sleeping passengers, headbutting cabin crew, and breaking free of leg restraints to kick at staff.
William Clegg, 33, is accused of assaulting five flight attendants on his way home from San Jose, California, to London Heathrow Airport.
The man, who is said to travel frequently for work, is said to have consumed two Ambien sleeping pills, an Imovane tablet of zopiclone, three glasses of wine, and two travel-sized bottles of Baileys.
Jurors were told that cabin crew were forced to physically restrain the man after he put his t-shirt over the head of a female cabin crew member before dragging another member of staff to the ground.
Clegg, who appeared at Isleworth Crown Court in a sharp navy suit, has denied five counts of assault by beating.
Clegg has epilepsy and insomnia, according to prosecutor Paul Edwards, and works in a “high-powered job that requires him to travel to different countries and stay for only a short time.”
“While he was in the United States, he went to a doctor for insomnia and was prescribed zolpidem, also known as Ambien, which is a sleeping tablet,” he said.
He was also taking zopiclone (Imovane), a sleeping pill.
“He was told to take one tablet, which is 12.5 milligrams.
“On the flight, Mr Clegg took two zolpidem tablets and one zopiclone tablet.
Three glasses of wine and two bottles of Baileys were also consumed.
“As a result of this, the Crown claims, he began acting strangely.”
