Cargo Aircraft Skids Off Hong Kong Runway into Sea
A cargo aircraft veered off a runway and into the sea at Hong Kong International Airport on January 24th. The incident occurred with a Boeing 747-400 freighter operated by national flag carrier Cathay Pacific.
The aircraft, traveling from Anchorage, Alaska, was attempting to land at the airport when it experienced the accident. Airport authorities confirmed the incident involved a runway excursion.
The two-person crew on board the aircraft were able to exit the plane safely and did not sustain any injuries. Both were rescued from the sea.
Following the incident, the airport suspended all flight operations. This was done to allow for an assessment of the runway and the aircraft’s position. Efforts were underway to remove the aircraft from the water. The exact cause of the skid off the runway has not yet been determined.
