Ethiopian Airlines Now Nigeria’s Top Carrier with 34 Frequencies

Ethiopian Airlines stands as the largest foreign carrier operating in Nigeria, a status confirmed by its extensive schedule of 34 weekly flights into the country. The airline serves four major Nigerian destinations: Abuja, Lagos, Kano, and Enugu.

This confirmation was provided by the Ethiopian Ambassador to Nigeria, Awallu Wagga, during a courtesy visit to the management of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). The ambassador emphasized the strong and long-standing relationship between the two countries, which is foundational to the airline’s significant operations.

A 50-Year Partnership

The airline’s deep connection with Nigeria is not a recent development. Ethiopian Airlines has been serving the Nigerian market for 50 years, building a relationship based on the Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) between Ethiopia and Nigeria.

Ambassador Wagga noted that this partnership has been mutually beneficial, reinforcing the ties between the two nations. He stated that Ethiopian Airlines provides a crucial link for Nigeria, connecting it to the rest of the world through the carrier’s extensive global network.

Commitment and Reliability

The airline’s dedication to Nigeria was particularly highlighted by its service during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was reportedly the only international airline that continued to operate flights into Nigeria without interruption during the global lockdown, showcasing its reliability and commitment to the market.

Mr. Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group, described Nigeria as one of the airline’s largest markets and reaffirmed its Pan-African vision. He referred to the carrier, which is the largest airline in Africa with the continent’s most modern fleet, as a key asset for Africa.
