Vueling, the Spanish low-cost airline owned by International Airlines Group (IAG), has been fined €30,000 ($32,000) by the Catalonian authorities for what have been called “sexist” appearance rules imposed on flight attendants. The regulations required male flight attendants to have a “clean and neat appearance”, while female staff had to wear foundation, eyeliner, mascara and high heels of between two to three inches. Authorities have directed Vueling to establish “less burdensome and [a] more balanced corporate image, without affecting fundamental rights”. The airline has stated that it will no longer impose different appearance standards on male and female members of cabin crew.
