Spain’s budget airline, Vueling, has been fined €30,000 by authorities in Catalonia for enforcing gender discriminatory appearance rules for its female employees. The dress code called for female flight attendants to wear makeup, including foundation, eyeliner, and black mascara, and to wear heels up to three inches high, while their male counterparts were only required to have a “clean and neat appearance”. The Stavla union representing flight attendants at the airline brought the complaint against the company last year, citing gender discrimination. Vueling, which is part of International Airlines Group, which owns British Airways, Aer Lingus and Iberia, has said it will now introduce gender-neutral appearance standards.
