IAG, an Australian insurance company, has published a report calling for greater planned relocation of Australian homes and communities vulnerable to natural catastrophes. Deloitte estimates that natural disasters will begin to cost the Australian economy $73 billion annually by 2060. The report argues that planned relocation would help to contain these costs, while avoiding annual damage to properties, community open space and emergency responses. The study argues that planned relocation must be coordinated by state and territory government agencies, that national guidance should be developed and funded integration support provided for relocated residents. The report makes seven specific recommendations.
