A report commissioned by insurance firm IAG and resilience advisory firm Rhelm explores how planned relocation can protect individuals and communities from natural disasters such as floods and bushfires. The report was commissioned to help governments and communities assess when planned relocation is a viable option, and provides recommendations on how governments can best deliver a planned relocation scheme. The report highlights that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to planned relocation and that the benefits and consequences must be weighed up, taking into account people’s connection to their homes and communities as well as wider financial and social costs. Seven key recommendations to support planned relocation include developing national guidance, prioritising support measures for relocated residents and formalising funding arrangements.
