Cyclone Remal: IMD Issues Red Alert for West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh Gears Up
Visakhapatnam: Authorities in Andhra Pradesh are on alert as Cyclone Remal intensifies, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for West Bengal and an orange alert for coastal Andhra Pradesh. The cyclonic storm, expected to make landfall on Sunday night between Sagar Island and Khepupara, near the coast of Bangladesh, is bringing heavy rainfall and strong winds to the region.
The IMD has forecast extremely heavy rainfall in coastal West Bengal, particularly in Kolkata, and heavy to very heavy showers across the state. Odisha is also expected to experience significant rainfall. In Andhra Pradesh, coastal districts are bracing for impact, with authorities taking precautionary measures to ensure public safety.
The Andhra Pradesh government has initiated several measures, including moving people from low-lying areas to safer locations and preparing relief camps. State Disaster Response Force teams have been deployed to vulnerable areas. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until further notice.
Cyclone Remal is characterized by its rapid intensification and is moving north-eastwards. The storm is bringing squally winds with speeds reaching up to 110 kmph along the coast. The IMD has urged residents in affected areas to stay indoors and follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities.
In preparation for the cyclone, the West Bengal government has also put its disaster management machinery on high alert. Flights to and from Kolkata Airport have been suspended for a period due to the severe weather conditions.
The cyclone is expected to cause significant damage to infrastructure, including power lines and communication networks. Relief and rescue teams are on standby to address any exigencies that may arise once the cyclone makes landfall.
