Korean Air has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with several key South Korean aviation bodies to collaborate on an urban air mobility (UAM) system. The partnership includes the Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC), the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), and the Korea Institute of Aviation Safety Technology (KIAST).
The primary goal of this collaboration is to establish a safe and effective UAM traffic management system and to develop a viable model for commercialisation. The agreement was signed at the K-UAM Confex event in Incheon.
### Roles and Responsibilities
Under the agreement, each partner will leverage its expertise to contribute to the project. Korean Air will be responsible for developing a UAM operations control system and a traffic management system. The Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC) will focus on creating the necessary infrastructure, including the construction of UAM airports, known as vertiports, and establishing transit hubs that connect UAM services with existing public transport.
The Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) will contribute by developing the technology for UAM airspace and traffic management. Meanwhile, the Korea Institute of Aviation Safety Technology (KIAST) will handle research into UAM aircraft certification and establish necessary safety standards.
### Demonstration Flights and Future Goals
The partnership plans to conduct UAM demonstration flights next year. These flights will take place over the Ara Canal, a waterway in Incheon, and will cover distances of up to 50km. This phase is crucial for testing the integrated UAM system in a real-world setting.
This initiative is part of the government-led ‘UAM Team Korea’, a public-private consultative body comprising 40 companies, which was formed in June of last year. The overarching ambition is to commercialise UAM services by 2025. The project aims to address urban traffic congestion and position South Korea as a global leader in the emerging urban air mobility industry.
