On April 20, it was reported that a Korean Air passenger plane narrowly avoided colliding with an Air Busan flight during takeoff at Gimpo Airport the previous day. The Korean Air flight KE1118, carrying over 200 passengers, left a movement area and entered the runway in use by Air Busan flight BX8027. The Air Busan flight had to be aborted and “nosed up” to avoid the collision. Aviation industry sources stated that if the Air Busan aircraft had delayed taking off for just a few seconds, the incident could have had major repercussions. Access to a runway during takeoff is strictly prohibited for any aircraft except the one taking off, as engine power rises to the maximum. The Seoul Regional Aviation Authority, which oversees Gimpo Airport, is looking into the incident, though Korean Air has said there was a “communication problem” between their flight crew and the airport controller.
