The first flight connecting Chengdu Tianfu International Airport to Beijing departed on Sunday. The airport’s inaugural flight from Sichuan Airlines A350-900 towards Beijing departed on Sunday, carrying 262 people, with Beijing Airlines and China Eastern following soon after. Chengdu Airlines, Spring Airlines, and Lucky Air will all begin operations within the next few days. The Chengdu Tianfu International Airport is located in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province.
The Airport can accommodate 60 million passengers annually. In addition, the southwestern region attracts many tourists, partly due to its panda habitats.

Chengdu would become China’s third city to acquire two international airports, but the current one will continue to serve primarily domestic flights.
Six runway
The new airport includes two terminals and three runways, which will be expanded to six by 2035. One of Tianfu’s runways, at 4,000m in length and 75m in width, is the absolute highest 4F runway capable of supporting passenger aircraft. With a combined size of 710,000m2, the two terminals can accommodate almost 60 million passengers and 1.3 million tonnes of cargo yearly.
As per Wu Ding, an officer in charge of the airport’s development, the airport has incorporated more than 30 innovative technologies. The initiative was the third phase of the airport’s main development plan, which aimed to rebuild the facility into an aviation transit route along the Silk Road.
It is intended to alleviate strain on the city’s Shuangliu airport, which is expected to become China’s second busiest in 2020.
