Grounded Thai Lion Air plane departs Kolkata- The Week
A Lion Air flight en route from Silchar, Assam, to Agartala, Tripura, was forced to make an unscheduled emergency landing at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, West Bengal, on Saturday. The Boeing 737 aircraft experienced technical difficulties, prompting the diversion.
The flight, identified as Lion Air flight JT 622, was carrying 116 passengers and six crew members. While en route, the pilots detected a problem with one of the aircraft’s engines. Following standard safety protocols, the crew made the decision to divert to the nearest suitable airport, which was Kolkata.
Airport authorities were alerted of the impending emergency landing and made all necessary arrangements for the safe arrival of the aircraft. Emergency services, including fire tenders and medical personnel, were on standby. The landing was executed without any further incident, and all passengers and crew disembarked safely.
Following the landing, passengers were accommodated at the airport and arrangements were made for their onward journey. Lion Air is reportedly making efforts to arrange a replacement aircraft to transport the stranded passengers to their original destination. Investigations into the exact cause of the engine malfunction are expected to be conducted by the airline and aviation authorities. This incident highlights the critical importance of stringent safety measures and quick decision-making by flight crews in ensuring passenger well-being.
