IRS launches free tax filing in 12 states
For some time, the IRS has been working on a program for free, online tax filing called “Direct File;” the idea being that people with relatively simply tax returns will be able to file them electronically at no cost. The pilot version of Direct File is now live in 12 states and it’s possible to file for free after creating an account. There’s a fairly low bar for what’s considered “too complicated” for Direct File: you can’t have business income, itemize your deductions or use certain credits against your taxes.
