Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport has welcomed VietJet, the Vietnamese low-cost carrier, as its 50th airline following the inaugural flight between Sydney and Ho Chi Minh on 23 December 2021. Initially, VietJet will operate three nonstop flights per week, with the potential to expand and offer daily service to Sydney as early as 2024. Despite a challenging 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam predicts a return to 2019 passenger levels by year-end, with an estimated 80 million passengers carried, including 34 million international travelers. Vietnam’s largest private carrier operates an all-Airbus fleet, which includes 38 A321s, 19 A321neos, 18 A320ceos, and five A330-300 widebodies, and has ordered 20 Airbus A321XLRs and a mixture of 106 Boeing 737 Max 10s, 66 Max 8s, and 28 Max 200s.
