Indian airline Vistara has become the first in the country to operate a commercial domestic flight on a widebody aircraft using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The flight, which cut carbon dioxide emissions by about 4,500kg, blended 17% SAF and 83% conventional jet fuel. Other Indian carriers have previously operated demo flights using SAF but not commercial ones. The global aviation industry is working towards being carbon neutral or net-zero by 2050. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has committed to turning India net carbon zero by 2070, with the increased use of sustainable aviation fuel among the milestones en route.
