Wizz Air has made its first equity investment in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) research and development, investing £5m in UK-based aviation fuel producer Firefly. Under the deal, Wizz Air will supply SAF to its UK operations from 2028, with an estimated total of 525,000 tonnes of SAF over 15 years. The deal has the potential to save up to 1.5 million tonnes of CO2. Firefly converts sewage sludge into SAF, which the company projects will yield a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil jet fuel. The funds from Wizz Air will accelerate Firefly’s commercialisation plans.
