European budget airline Wizz Air has lost its challenge against €62m in state aid provided to Romanian rival Blue Air. The subsidies were granted in conformity with the European Union’s state aid rules and designed to offset any economic damage incurred by Blue Air in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Wizz Air had lodged its appeal with the Luxembourg-based General Court, arguing that the EU executive’s decision was flawed. A number of other carriers have similarly sued the European Commission over the agency’s clearance of state aid to their rivals. Wizz Air may appeal the decision to the EU Court of Justice.
