Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group is bolstering its commitment to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) through new agreements, signaling a significant push towards decarbonizing air travel. The airline has secured a sustainable aviation fuel supply from Neste, which would provide SIA and Scoot flights departing Changi Airport with approximately 1,000 tonnes of neat SAF.
This agreement builds upon a prior partnership, demonstrating SIA’s proactive approach to integrating SAF into its operations. SAF, produced from renewable waste and residue raw materials, offers a substantial reduction in carbon emissions compared to conventional jet fuel. The collaboration enables SIA to significantly reduce its carbon footprint, contributing to the aviation industry’s broader sustainability goals.
Further strengthening its SAF initiatives, SIA has also launched a pilot project utilizing a book-and-claim system with GenZero, a Temasek-backed decarbonization company, and Climate Impact X (CIX), a global carbon exchange. This innovative approach facilitates a more flexible and scalable adoption of SAF. Under the “book-and-claim” model, companies can purchase SAF certificates even if SAF isn’t physically available at their departure airport. This allows airlines operating in regions with limited SAF availability to still claim the environmental benefits of SAF used elsewhere, supporting global SAF adoption. The pilot will explore end-to-end tracking of SAF certificates, ensuring transparency and credibility in SAF usage claims. This can allow corporate clients who want to lower emissions for business travel the opporunity to do so.
These agreements highlight SIA’s multi-pronged strategy to advance SAF adoption. By securing direct SAF supply and pioneering innovative certificate systems, SIA aims to make sustainable air travel more accessible and contribute to a greener future for the aviation industry. The steps taken by SIA could be a model for other airlines to follow in their own sustainability programs.
