A landlord in South Philadelphia is suing Airbnb alleging that the company is responsible for over $100,000 in damages and lost income caused by a squatter on his property. Joseph Foresta claims that he believed Airbnb had “thoroughly vetted” prospective guests and that the company was responsible for the safety of the host’s property. Despite this, an individual named Lawrence H. Jackson squatted in Foresta’s residence for three months, refused to leave, changed the locks, rented out the other apartments, and caused extensive damage to the interior and exterior of the property. Foresta alleges that his calls to Airbnb were not returned, and letters from his legal counsel were not answered. The lawsuit claims that it was not until August 2020 that Airbnb finally acknowledged the communications but did nothing to remove Jackson from the property or address the damage done. Airbnb told Fox News Digital that they do not comment on pending litigation but stated that Foresta has been banned from hosting on Airbnb since July 2020 “due to frequent violations of our community standards and policies.”
