The Quebec government has implemented new regulations on short-term rentals, leading to a crackdown on the sector and push-back from some hosts. In the wake of a fatal fire in short-term rental accommodations, Airbnb has removed unlicensed listings in the province from its site. Quebec’s government has also announced a bill that would compel other platforms to do the same. Those complying with regulations have welcomed the clean-up, while others have tried to evade the new rules. Despite a prospective reduction in the number of homes on the short-term rental market, there should be enough accommodation available for tourists to Montreal; however, both hotel and short-term rental prices may rise, and some tourists may have to stay in the suburbs. The abrupt nature of the new regulations, as well as confusion over requirements to obtain permits and ensure properties are in regions allowing short-term rentals, has led to some hosts listing fake permit numbers or attempting to circumvent the restrictions altogether. However, compliance could benefit legitimate hosts as there is likely to be less competition from those flouting the new legislation.
