Singapore Labour Unions Welcome Agoda Apology Over Severance Clauses
Singapore’s labour unions have expressed their welcome for Agoda’s apology following revelations about employment clauses that reportedly barred employees from approaching authorities or unions with grievances. The online travel agency has since removed these clauses.
The issue came to light when a former Agoda employee publicly shared their experience, which subsequently drew attention from the Tripartite Alliance for Fair & Progressive Employment Practices (TAFEP) and the Ministry of Manpower (MOM). Agoda’s apology was issued after an investigation by TAFEP.
The clauses in question were reportedly part of the company’s employment contracts and were seen as potentially obstructing employees’ rights to seek assistance from external bodies, including the government and labour unions. TAFEP, in its statement, emphasized that employment contracts should not contain clauses that prevent employees from seeking help.
The intervention of TAFEP and MOM highlights the importance of fair employment practices and the protection of workers’ rights within Singapore. The unions have stressed the significance of open channels for employees to voice concerns without fear of reprisal.
Agoda has stated that it is committed to reviewing and updating its employment practices to align with fair and progressive employment standards. The company’s move to remove the contentious clauses is viewed positively by labour groups as a step towards fostering a more supportive and transparent work environment.
