And yet, there are reasons that I sometimes do book a chain hotel. A few years ago, Dave and I stayed in a nice-enough B&B in Narbonne, France. At breakfast, while I was trying to savor the French “breakfast of champions” (croissants tartine, and splendid café-au-lait), the hotelier stood at our table and admonished us for booking our reservation through Expedia—which, she said, cut into the B&B’s profits.
