Amazon has launched a business accelerator programme, aimed at African fintech companies, through its cloud computing division, Amazon Web Services. The move is a sign of the e-commerce giant’s growing ambitions in Africa, as it looks to provide training and digital infrastructure and services to the market. The accelerator will be hosted by AWS’ Startup Loft and will provide start-ups with training and support, as well as up to $25,000 in AWS credits, to help them get off the ground. The hope is that the programme will help drive innovation in the region’s financial technology sector, which sees huge potential due to the high rates of mobile phone adoption.
