Traveloka and South Pole partner to launch pilot climate action checkout for Singapore travellers
Singapore-based users of Traveloka, a key travel platform in Southeast Asia, will now have the opportunity to contribute to global climate action and purchase carbon credits while booking flights on the platform. This initiative, called the pilot climate action checkout, is a collaboration between Traveloka and South Pole, a global climate company.
Starting from June 16, 2023, Singaporean consumers will be able to see the amount of greenhouse gases emitted on their flights and make donations towards a climate action project aimed at reducing emissions. The generated revenue will be invested in the Khon Buri wastewater treatment plant in Thailand, contributing to greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation efforts.
The Khon Buri project involves a closed-loop system that captures methane emissions from a starch factory and converts the gas into heat and electricity for the facility. This approach not only reduces GHG emissions but also decreases fossil fuel consumption.
According to Caesar Indra, President of Traveloka, sustainability is crucial for the future of travel. As a prominent travel platform in the region, Indra says Traveloka is committed to addressing its own emissions and empowering travelers to understand and address their environmental impact. The pilot climate action checkout for Singapore travelers marks a step towards providing more comprehensive climate offerings.
Marwan Mounzer, Global Associate Director of Digital Solutions at South Pole, emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing climate change. By partnering with Traveloka, South Pole aims to raise customer awareness and drive emission reductions, contributing to global net zero with each purchase.
“We need everyone, everywhere to play an active role in addressing climate change. We must go beyond reducing our own impact and invest in climate action activities that reduce emissions across the globe now. Research tells us that it’s not just companies who are looking for an opportunity to take responsibility for their impact. Customers are too,” said Marwan.
In addition to the climate action checkout, Traveloka recently introduced a feature allowing users to identify and book hotels in Indonesia with credible sustainability certifications accredited by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. This initiative reflects Traveloka’s strong commitment to promoting sustainable tourism practices in Southeast Asia.
The travel industry is experiencing a resurgence, but this time with a new responsibility—sustainability. The sector’s post-pandemic rebound will prioritize the environment and embrace more responsible forms of travel.
Traveloka’s portfolio includes flight tickets, bus and train bookings, car rentals, airport transfers, and accommodations in Southeast Asia. The platform also provides financing, payment, and insurance products to Southeast Asian consumers. Meanwhile, South Pole are helping companies fund climate action while they rethink their value chains and funding the urgently needed restoration of nature and growth of renewables.
