Tripadvisor was able to detect and stop more than 1 million fake or fraudulent reviews in 2022, according to the company’s 2023 Review Transparency report. This accounted for about 4.4% of all reviews submitted. Of those, 72% of the fake or fraudulent reviews were stopped from ever making it onto the website, marking a significant improvement compared to 2020 when only 67% were stopped. Just over 24,500 of the fake reviews detected were associated with paid review companies, and nearly half originated in six countries: India, Russia, the United States, Turkey, Italy, and Vietnam. To spot a fake review, it is recommended to look for reviews that are recent, first-hand, relevant, respectful, and unbiased.
