The Boeing 737 Max is set to return to service in December 2020, following two fatal crashes and nearly two years of grounding. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved the aircraft’s return to service after making software and training updates. However, the aircraft will still face regulatory hurdles in Europe and other countries before it can fly worldwide. Airlines will also require pilot training and a number of safety enhancements before the aircraft can operate commercially. The crashes of Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 killed 346 people and exposed flaws in the aircraft’s automated flight control system. The return of the 737 Max is seen as a key test for Boeing, following a difficult year that saw it lose market share to Airbus and suffer a corporate crisis with the pandemic affecting air travel.
