Cambodia is set to host its first Southeast Asian Games (SEA) and ASEAN PARA Games, with 12,404 athletes, coaches, and staff delegates from 11 countries competing in 39 events. The SEA Games were first competed in 1958 and were founded to promote cooperation, understanding, and relations among Southeast Asian countries. Cambodia is one of the six founding members of the SEAP Games Federation. The 32nd SEA Games and 12th ASEAN PARA Games will be held at the Morodok Techo National Stadium, Cambodia’s largest stadium, financed and constructed by China at an estimated $150 million. The games are expected to cost Cambodia over $200 million, with hopes that it will help boost the country’s tourism, one of the four major economic sectors, which has been impacted by COVID-19. Cambodia is focusing on “Visit Cambodia Year 2023” with the theme “MICE and Sports”, which also includes the Mekong Tourism Forum, the historical New Year celebrations, and the SEA Games.
