Cambodia is preparing to host its first Southeast Asian Games (SEA) and ASEAN PARA Games in May 2023. The event is the largest sporting event that Cambodia has ever hosted, with 12,404 athletes, coaches, and staff delegates from 11 countries competing in 39 events. The 32nd SEA Games and 12th ASEAN PARA Games will be held at the 60,000-seat Morodok Techo National Stadium, which was entirely financed and constructed by China at an estimated cost of $150 million. With the recent completion of the Worldbridge Sport Village, a 12-building, 1747-room accommodation capable of holding up to 7,000 athletes, Cambodia hopes to show off a modern look to the world. The cost of the games is estimated to be in excess of $200 million between infrastructure and hosting costs. Cambodia is looking to boost its tourism industry, which was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, using the SEA Games as a platform to achieve its goal of increasing international tourist numbers to 4.0 to 4.5 million in 2023. Cambodia’s tourism objectives also include organizing the historical new year celebrations and the Mekong Tourism Forum 2023 in Sihanoukville on “Rethinking for Resilience and Digitalization.”
