The Mekong Tourism Forum (MTF) and associated events are taking place in Preah Sihanouk province from April 24-28, with an expected 250 delegates from 19 countries set to participate. The MTF presents an opportunity for Cambodia to showcase its tourism potential to an international audience and encourage people to visit. Notable events include the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Tourism Working Group and an Exhibition on Sustainable Tourism, along with panel discussions and presentations from national and international speakers. According to Cambodia’s Pacific Asia Travel Association, the forum offers a platform for promoting the country’s tourism industry to a broad audience. While domestic tourism has grown considerably over the past few months, progress in the international segment has been lacklustre with visitor numbers still significantly below pre-Covid-19 levels. However, airport expansion projects, such as the new Class 4E Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport, are expected to boost visitor numbers and contribute to economic growth. In 2022, Cambodia welcomed 2.277 million foreign visitors, down 65.56% from the record booked in 2019. This year, the country has forecast four million foreign visitors, although industry professionals have cited political and economic instability as a possible hindrance.
