China’s reopening after COVID-19 lockdown is expected to boost tourism in Cambodia. Cambodia has also started to reopen its borders for international tourists, with measures including pre-departure COVID-19 testing, health insurance coverage, visa requirements, and quarantine procedures. In addition, China and Cambodia have signed a memorandum of understanding on tourism cooperation, aiming to enhance bilateral travel and promote cross-border tourism. Cambodia mainly targets Chinese tourists as they account for the largest group of foreign visitors, accounting for 2.6 million of the 6.61 million foreign tourists who visited Cambodia in 2019. The reopening of Cambodia and China is expected to bring back tourists and revive the tourism industry. However, Cambodia faces challenges in terms of capacity, infrastructure, and the implementation of COVID-19 protocols. The Cambodian government has also announced a 50% discount on ticket prices for all domestic airlines, aiming to encourage domestic tourism and help airlines stay afloat amid the pandemic.
