The Asia Pacific region’s tourism sector is experiencing a robust recovery and is poised for significant growth, with projections indicating over 290 million international visitors by 2025. This promising outlook is largely driven by the re-entry of China as a major source market, alongside continued strong visitor numbers from countries like the USA, Brazil, and Australia. The region, known for its over 100 diverse destinations, is a critical player in global tourism.

The travel and tourism sector’s contribution to the Asia Pacific region’s economy is substantial and is showing strong signs of recovery. In 2023, the sector contributed USD 1.3 trillion to the region’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), marking a 58.3% increase from 2022. This rebound follows a pre-pandemic peak of USD 2.6 trillion in 2019. The sector also supported 177 million jobs in 2023, representing a 23.5% increase from the previous year.

### Driving Factors for Growth

The reopening of China’s borders has been a pivotal factor in the region’s tourism resurgence. With travel restrictions eased, Chinese tourists are once again exploring international destinations, significantly boosting visitor numbers across the Asia Pacific. The region’s appeal is further strengthened by its vast array of experiences, from cultural heritage sites to natural landscapes, attracting visitors from diverse global markets. Collaborative efforts among industry stakeholders are also playing a crucial role in promoting the region and enhancing visitor experiences.

### Future Projections and Collaborative Strategies

Industry experts anticipate that international visitor arrivals to the Asia Pacific will recover to approximately 92% of 2019 levels by the end of 2024. Projections indicate a 10% growth in international arrivals for 2024, followed by an expected growth of between 10% and 12% in 2025. This trajectory is expected to result in between 290 million and 300 million international arrivals in 2025. The region’s tourism future is focused on sustainable growth, leveraging its cultural richness and natural beauty, while fostering cooperation among destinations to meet evolving traveler demands. The Asia Pacific region, home to over 40 percent of the global population, continues to build a resilient and thriving tourism ecosystem.
